At the eastern end of Crete's desert landscape, Vai's beach is renowned for its natural palm grove (the only one in Europe), white sand, ochre rocks and clear waters, sadly overrun by holidaymakers. To the north, near an ancient Minoan settlement, Itanos beach unfurls in a wild setting. In the south is Maridati beach, reached via a dirt track and off the tourist trail.
