Visit the city's historic waterfront to relive Salem's glory days. Of the 40 wharves that once reached out into the harbor, Derby Wharf, the longest (2,100 feet), remains. Guided tours of the site include the Custom House, where Nathaniel Hawthorne worked as a port officer; the Derby House (1761); and a replica of the merchant vessel Friendship.
