The decision to create Via della Conciliazione was taken in 1936 and this wide thoroughfare was opened in 1950, Jubilee Year. The façades of the buildings flanking the end of the street bear the arms of Pius XII (right) and of Rome (left). Two rows of street lamps in the shape of obelisks line the broad road which leads directly to St Peter's Basilica.
