In the 18C, this crossroads was a focal point of the Left Bank, with a sedan chair rank, a corps of sentries, and a reputation as a place of ill-repute. Rue de Buci was home to three real tennis courts. Nowadays, the district is still busy thanks to its market and the many restaurants in neighbouring streets, such as Rue Grégoire-de-Tours and Rue de Bourbon-le-Château, as well as a number of small fashion boutiques.
