The town defensive forward post for Syracuse as a result of its dominant and strategic position. On the hill was the acropolis but now you can see no more than a small theatre in white stone, linked to the bouleuterion or Council chamber. The two stone-pits from the Grecian era were converted by the Christians into catacombs and dwellings.
