Apart from a few remarkable buildings, the whole of the so-called "Corps de Ville" quarter was dynamited by the Nazis in 1943, following the evacuation of its 25 000 inhabitants, on the grounds that it was insalubrious. The town hall flanked by arcaded tower blocks was designed by Fernand Pouillon after the war.
