In the Minahasa highlands, ploughing through fields then in the mugginess of the rainforest, you can hardly believe you are climbing a volcano! At the top of Mt Mahawu (1 311m), there lies a splendid smoking crater lake, whose turquoise waters surrounded by yellow emit a pungent smell of sulphur. Go around the lake to appreciate the panoramic view that stretches out over the sea and, in closer quarters, over the volcano Mt Lokon and the surrounding countryside.
