This area, the character of which was irrevocably changed when buildings were erected here in 1937, occupies an area hemmed in by the Strand and the Thames. In the late 18C and into the 19C, it was a sort of little Athens popular with artists. At least two fine examples of the Adam style have survived. In John Adam Street, the Royal Society of Art has its seat at no 8, in a residence dating from 1774. A little further along, a building at 7 Adam Street presents pilasters sculpted with honeysuckle.
