Today in ruins, Cartoixa d'Escaladei, Priorat's spiritual centre founded in 1194, was the oldest charterhouse on the whole peninsula. You can still make out the Classical portal, which led to the monastery, and the old church, Santa Maria. The cells, one of which has been reconstructed, were the key feature of the charterhouse insofar as the monks carried out most of their tasks there; each one has an individual vegetable garden.
