Founded in 1142, the abbey of Sedlec was at the apotheosis of its prosperity in the late 13C. Its abbey church of Our Lady of Assumption was ransacked in 1421 and only replaced in 1699. The architect Santini-Aichel (1667-1723), entrusted with its restoration, adorned the exterior with pinnacles and decorated the interior with a vault of medieval inspiration. It was the first example of the architect's personal synthesis of the Baroque and Gothic styles, which he went on to apply throughout Bohemia. The abbey is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
