Unfortunately now bordered by a racetrack, this mythological lake is where Hades, the god of the underworld, rose up in his golden chariot, pulled by immortal horses, to kidnap Persephone, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. Demeter finally obtained Zeus's permission to bring her back to earth with her. But because Persephone had eaten the "fruit of the dead" (pomegranate seeds), she could no longer leave her husband.
