This is where Digne was founded in the 14C, developing around a since disappeared castle. Tiny, winding streets interspersed with flights of steps (like Montée Saint-Charles with its vaulted passages) lead to St Jerome cathedral which overlooks the town. At the foot of the hill, the pedestrian streets are lined in attractive pastel-coloured shops.
