Count Cattani da Chiusi gave Mt Verna to St Francis in 1213, marking the beginning of the sanctuary's history. The saint moved here with his followers and in 1224 received the Stigmata here. Perched on a rock, the sanctuary has a tranquil, contemplative feel thanks to its location and atmosphere. The Franciscans come here daily in a procession to the Chapel of the Stigmata along the Corridoio delle Stimmate (Corridor of Stigmata), which is adorned with frescoes.
