The office buildings of the Financial District and the commercial area of Downtown Crossing join to form a district known as Downtown, surrounded, to the south, by Chinatown, the Theater District and South Station, to the north, by Faneuil Hall, to the west, by Boston Common and, to the east, by the Waterfront. The renovation of Faneuil Hall Marketplace in the 1970s transformed the centre of the city, injecting it with new life.
