In the early 20C, Phoebe Hearst (mother of the press tycoon) contributed to the building of this prestigious campus with bequests and subsidies that she raised. Architecturally, the campus is inspired by ancient Greece. Each of the university's different buildings bears the name of a benefactor and they are dotted over a huge 1,232 acre/500 ha wooded estate. The most outstanding buildings are located centrally, between the forks of Strawberry Creek.
