Mined since Antiquity, these stone quarries were a favourite subject of Cézanne's - he came here to capture the rocks and their unique colours. The painter produced 11 oils and 16 watercolours, most of which are in the United States. On the site, we can identify the locations of The Red Rock, two Bibémus Quarries and Mont St Victoire seen from Bibémus Quarries. The ochre molasses extracted from the quarry were used to build private mansions in Aix, particularly in the 17C and 18C.
