A few kilometres from Bishkek, this gorge has become a firm favourite with hiking enthusiasts in summer and ski lovers in winter. Locals flock to this national park, which has managed to retain both its wild appearance and the vast juniper forests that gave it its name. In fine weather you can try out the hiking and pony-trekking trails laid out along the river, with the snow-capped peaks of Tian Shan and the Ak-Sai Glacier looming large in the background.
