In 1961, the eastern coast of Cape Cod, a fragile ecosystem of dunes, lagoons, woods and cliffs, was declared a protected nature reserve: Cape Cod National Seashore (27 000 acres). Choose from several beaches here (lifeguards are on duty in summer): Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Light Beach, Marconi Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach, Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach. A visitor centre is located at each end of the reserve.
