When the Spanish artist, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949), decided to rent one of the rooms of this palazzo as his workshop, the 16C building was in very poor condition. Fortuny, an artist, photographer, interior decorator and fabric creator, gradually bought up each apartment and in a few years, restored the whole building. Today one of the most elegant palazzi in Venice, the Palazzo Fortuny hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to the artist.
