De beoordeling van de Michelin Gids
The world's largest collection of art of the American West, the Gilcrease exhibits paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by more than 400 artists-with significant holdings of works by Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Albert Bierstadt, George Catlin, Nicolai Fechin, William R. Leigh, Thomas Moran and Olaf Seltzer. It features outstanding Native American art and artifacts, including one gallery devoted to Oklahoma Indians; an interactive exhibit on Mexican art, history and culture; and myriad historical manuscripts, documents and maps. Local oilman Thomas Gilcrease (1890-1962) began collecting in 1922 when few others were interested in Western art. In 1949, he built this museum on his estate. The 460-acre grounds contain theme gardens, outdoor sculpture, natural meadows and woodlands. From pleasant walking paths there are panoramic views of the Osage Hills.
