This Shinto shrine, formerly of major importance because it is devoted to the divine couple, Izanagi and Izanami, who founded Japan on the island of Awaji, is located at the exact centre of the country. A long path leads to the temple and chambers for worship (haiden) and purification (haraiden) in the main pavilion. A delightful Japanese garden, adorned with two entwined camphor trees, surrounds the shrine. During the great earthquake of 1995, the edifice was greatly damaged, but it has been rebuilt.
