In this district, historically reserved for trade, craftsmen's buildings and warehouses remain standing, connected by narrow streets. In Ottoman times, it was a key trade centre for the Balkans. As is customary, in the evening, the guards watched over the deserted warehouses. When a store-owner forgot to shut up shop, the guard would stay up all night and in the morning receive a third of the value of his goods from the store-owner.
