In the 9C, the Benedictine monks of Ripoll were bequeathed one of five existing hermitages on Mount Montserrat, establishing a community which had become very important by the 11C, rising to its heyday in the 15C. The existing buildings do not reflect its rich history, apart from the 15C church, home to the Moreneta (Black Madonna).
