The Barbican extends along the "London Wall" following the course of a Roman fortification. The area has been reconstructed according to the precepts of "layered" town planning: car traffic on the lower level, pedestrians and businesses on the upper level, with the two levels joined by stairs. Bodies of water, trees, gardens and terraces planted with flowers, as well as the occasional Roman ruin, add a bright note to this modern world of concrete.
