An attractive wooden bridge leads to the Temple of the Jade Mound, which was built in the 19C on the site of the old palace of the Trinh lords on a small island in Hoan Kiem lake. It is dedicated to Van Xuong (the god of literature), General Tran Hug Dao (who defeated the Mongols in the 13C) and to the physician La To. A side room is home to a stuffed giant turtle discovered in the lake in 1968, which recalls the legend of the turtle and the sword which liberated the country from the Chinese.
