Abd ar-Rahman III began construction of this sumptuous city in 936, but hardly was it finished than it was sacked by the Berbers in 1013. Excavation work has revealed three terraces with a mosque below and an alcázar at the top. In the centre are the gardens and the Abd ar-Rahman III Reception Room, the jewel of the site, with its magnificent stone ornamentation carved into geometric and plant motifs.
