On the islet of Blejski Otok, which is only accessible by boat, the Church of the Assumption is picture perfect. Archaeology and legends are testimony to the fact that this unique site has seen a succession of pagan and primitive Christian cults. A Romanesque basilica (1142) then Gothic (1465) with its 52m bell tower was built but destroyed in 1509 by an earthquake. The 17C Baroque church and monumental staircase with 99 steps leading up from the shore of the lake offer an enchanting view.
